Feb. 29th, 2012 06:07 amThe year is 2366. Most of history has been lost, all the records burned years ago, before 2135. What little is known was passed down through generations of word of mouth. Kanda is the only person who can give an accurate description of both the nineteenth century and this futuristic time. Why? Because Kanda was originally an exorcist from then.
He has some vague ideas of history past 1903 but after it, he only knows what he experienced. He slept through most of it. By sleep, I mean his body was inactive. Almost like a robot would shut off without a power supply, Kanda fell into a deep, unending sleep when the war was lost and the Innocence went dormant. He didn't reawaken until 2360, when the first shard of Innocence found and was used by an Exorcist.
He lives in Tokyo, in a world where it is constant night. As such, the city is constantly lit up. It is called one of the Cities That Never Sleep because it's nearly impossible to get a moment's rest in the city. He lives outside the city, in one of the hovel-like villages outside the city. He comes in evenings to work as a bartender. It's a part time job, as he works as a futuristic samurai vigilant for an underground organization called the Black Order. It is run by a man simply known as the Cardinal and he is the only one who knows that he is Innocence personified. The Cardinal's right hand man is Rouvelier and below him is a man called Link.
In case you're wondering about his relationship with the other members of the Organization, I'll list the ones I remember. Since there are so many, I'm only listing the ones I think there's a chance of him running into.
Tyki: Before he went to sleep, he hated him simply because he was a Noah. Now that he's reawaken, that hatred is a little more personal and much more intense.
Lavi: His partner in the Order and the person he learned to trust the most. Before he went to sleep, they were the closest thing to best friends since Alma's death. After he reawakened, his relationship with Lavi changed. Like every other Exorcist, he had no memories of his past life so they had to start from scratch. They eventually became lovers and Kanda was very possessive of Lavi. Lavi is currently considered dead in his world and this news hit him very hard.
Lenalee/Komui: He was vaguely close with Lenalee before he went to sleep. After reawakening, he came to view her as a little sister. Komui still annoys him. Even moreso because he complains he'd trying to replace him one minute and that he's trying to "steal his Lenalee away" the next.
Miranda: Before he went to sleep, they were "yarinige" in his eyes. This is similar to "friends with benefits" or "sex friends" and means, almost literally, having sex with someone and then not calling them back. After he reawakened, he became slightly protective of her but they no longer have a sexual relationship. There's still a little left over tension from that time on his part, though.
Noise Marie: His closest friend since Alma's death and the one person he trusts more than Lavi. After reawakening, he found Noise Marie again and they became partners for missions. Noise Marie is his contact to the Order when he's on secret missions that won't let him contact the Order directly.
Allen: There's a lot of tension here. Before he went to sleep, they used to fight constantly. In fact, their relationship was exactly as it was in canon except for one difference. A major difference. Allen died while fighting the Earl and Kanda was the one who found him. With the last of his strength, he gave Kanda a parting kiss. Shortly after that, Kanda fell asleep. When he reawakened, none of the Order could find Allen for a very long time. Once he found him again, they instantly fell back into the same routine as before, arguing and fighting constantly. There's a strange pull that both feel, a connection between them that neither is willing to acknowledge. Kanda has never forgotten the kiss he received from the dying Allen.
